The S-ratings (S1, S1P, S2, S3) come from a European standard called EN ISO 20345. It is the international framework that classifies safety footwear by the combination of protective features it includes — beyond the basic steel toe cap that all safety shoes must have.

The Baseline — Every Safety Shoe Under EN ISO 20345

All shoes certified under EN ISO 20345 — regardless of S-rating — must pass one non-negotiable test: a 200-joule impact on the toe cap and 15,000 newton compression resistance. This is the same threshold as India's IS 15298. Everything above that baseline is what the S-rating describes. Think of S1 through S3 as layers of protection stacked on top of each other — each rating includes everything the previous one had, plus something more.

This is the most important section for procurement managers and safety officers in India. The two standards cover similar ground — but one is legally mandated in India and one is not.

The Critical Rule for India
